The Making of Great Photographs
Approaches and Techniques of the Masters of Photography.
By Eamonn McCabe. (David & Charles)
For any photographer it is always an interesting exercise to look at and analyze the work of others, particularly if that work is considered to be great. Eamonn McCabe begins by asking “What makes a great photograph?” Although he maintains that great photographs are taken every day, those selected are from the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, the most recent being 1982.
The book is arranged in four sections - i) documentary photography; ii) landscape and architecture; iii) photography as art; and iv) portrait photography. Photographers range from Fox Talbot to David Hockney.
The images chosen are certainly an interesting and varied selection. Although not presented in chronological order, the text with each photograph covers social history as well as photographic technique. The brief guides on how to create each image would be helpful to beginners.
Anyone with an interest in photography or the history of photography would find this book to be a rewarding study.
